Beyond Moore Group

Exploring novel computing technologies for the post-exascale era.

As Moore's Law plateaus, this group looks beyond traditional CMOS-based computing logic and the decades-old von Neumann architecture to meet the rapid pace of innovation needed to satisfy DOE’s computing goals and priorities. For the post-exascale era, novel technologies will need to be developed that are based on new kinds of nanoscale devices and nanomaterials, information conduits other than the electron charge such as superposition of quantum states, superconducting computing, optical computing, and new architectures informed by neuroscience. The Beyond Moore group at ORNL seeks to answer questions such as:

  • How to integrate new devices and materials with new  models of computation
  • How to transfer novel devices to large-scale systems
  • How these new technologies change the nature of computing itself
