Matt J McCarthy

Research Scientist in Remote Sensing

I am a Research Scientist developing Remote Sensing algorithms for the processing of unprecedented volumes of high resolution imagery Big Data. My M.S. and Ph.D. are both in Marine Science from UNC-Wilmington and the University of South Florida, respectively. I came to ORNL from a postdoc position at USF in the Institute for Marine Remote Sensing, where I developed a pipeline and algorithms to map thousands of high-resolution images for land cover along the entire US Gulf of Mexico coastline using the USF supercomputer.

My interests lie in automated processing of Big Data imagery to map and better understand environmental and anthropogenic processes for basic research and national security implications. ORNL's unparalleled resources, like the world's fastest supercomputer, are ideal for conducting this kind of work faster and more efficiently than ever.

2023: FY23 NSSD Core Values Champion, awarded for demonstrating service through his dedication to community outreach, DEI efforts, and cross-disciplinary partnerships to help advance remote sensing research for all.
