Silicon carbide (SiC) is an attractive material for high-temperature heat exchangers and nuclear reactor systems. To date, technological advancements have been stifled by manufacturing constraints, which are quite limiting for ceramics such as SiC.

Space heating in cold climates is largely accomplished by furnaces where air exchanges heat with flue gases of combusted fuel. Heat pumps are more energy efficient than furnaces but in cold climates their efficiency suffer due to frost accumulation on the outdoor coil.
